Прозвище наиболее прибыльной сельскохозяйственной культуры южных штатов в середине XIX в. Часто использовалось южными писателями, публицистами и ораторами. Впервые появилось в названии книги Д. Кристи [Christy, David] "Хлопок - наш король" ["Cotton is King"] (1855). Стало широко известно после выступления в Сенате Дж. Г. Хэммонда [ Hammond, James Henry], который в 1858 заявил: "И не думайте затевать войну против хлопка. С ним воевать не смеет ни одна держава на земле. Хлопок - наш король" ["You dare not make war upon cotton! No power on earth dares make war upon it. Cotton is king."].
